What I'm Reading

Since I love to read and I try to read a book a week, I   figured why not share what I'm reading on my website?   Anyone who knows me knows that I have strong   opinions and I'm not afraid to share them - especially   when it comes to something I'm passionate about, like   literature.

I hate being asked who my favorite authors are and what kinds of books I like to read. I see that akin to asking a surfer which waves he likes best. As with books, some waves are better than others, but a surfer rides them all and can't get enough of them. While not every book out there matches my own tastes, I respect all authors for what they do.

In particular, I'm drawn to classics, romance novels, mysteries, southern fiction, memoirs, religious books, fantasy stories and nonfiction books on writing. Some authors I especially enjoy are Charles Dickens, Jane Austen, Nicholas Sparks, John Irving, Stephen King and Stephenie Meyer. My favorite   books include A Tale of Two Cities, To Kill a   Mockingbird, Pride and Prejudice, As I Lay Dying,   Beasts, The Old Man and the Sea, The World According   to Garp, the Harry Potter series and Twilight.

So what am I reading right now? Well, I don't usually   do   this, but I happen to be in the middle of three   books at   once: Writer's Handbook, A Bend in the Road   by Nicholas Sparks and Gone With the Wind by Margaret Mitchell. Yes, three very different genres. I'm reading Writer's Handbook for advice with my job search. I started A Bend in the Road when I went on vacation last weekend because I love a good Nicholas Sparks story for a road trip. I'm only 30 pages from the end, and it's a good one - one of his earlier books, which I like more than his later ones. I started Gone with the Wind weeks ago, and though I didn't get very deep into it before being distracted with other books, I love it so far. When I finish these books, I'll do more detailed reviews!
